Hello Chris,
You really have millions of choices available. Your first step is to decide what you expect your cameras to do. Make a list of your most-wanted features:
– Ability to view images on a stand-alone monitor included with the system, or watch on a TV, PC or Mac while at home?
– Ability to view images on mobile device or smartphone (iPhone, Blackberry, etc.)? Remember, remote viewing on phones often doesn’t allow full control over camera viewing; as in you may only be able to see live video, not recorded. Check the specs carefully.
– Includes a DVR (Digital video recorder)? Probably Yes. You’ll need to record video when you’re not at home to watch the monitor.
– Do-it-yourself installation, or hire a company to do it? Balance the money saved versus the added headache of installing it yourself.
– Cameras outside? They’ll need to be weatherproof. Install under eaves or overhang, if possible.
– For night vision, how much lighting is there now? If the area to be viewed is in total darkness, look for cameras with around a 40-foot (advertised) range. They tend to have more infrared LED’s, and will do a better job. (They still may not meet your expectations in complete darkness).
Spend a little time looking at various options, and narrow down to what you really need the system to do for you. You can save money by doing the install yourself, and by focusing on a few key areas to watch.
I hope this helps!
There are really thousands of options nowadays. However in case you will decide for network IP cameras – you can then easily be able to keep an eye on the cameras from anywhere via internet or via your Smartphone. In that case you should ask your local provider for network IP cameras with Network Video Recorder (NVR). My recommendation for that is IPCorder NVR. Here you can check its funcionality in their online showroom: http://www.ipcorder.com/en/showroom
